Breaking The Habit

As touched on towards the end of this post, Carmella has been a regular character of Neighbours for some time now, although she hasn't been featured in the opening credit sequence yet. She hasn't been credited as "Sister Mary Catherine", either - and this led me to hypothesise that the nun business would be winding up at some point in the not-too-distant.

Well, tonight's episode seemed to back that hypothesis up. It looks like Carmella has been told to leave the nunnery behind for a while, and we've also found out the mysterious 'baby' news she's been keeping secret all this time. It wasn't the uber-obvious pregnancy angle (which I'm pleased to note); it was instead that her young cousin asked her to get rid of her baby for her ... and Carmella sold it to a childless couple for a hefty sum of cash. Even though she apparently split the money with her cousin, Carmella's share was still enough to pay for Connor's daughter Madeline's operation (which dates it for us as being at least a year or two ago), and Cameron Robinson heard Carmella on the phone with her cousin, telling her to stop contacting her because the deal was done and they couldn't get the baby back now if they tried. The guilt of this hanging over her head brought Carmella to a place where she had to confess the whole situation to Cameron, and he was there for her as a friend before being accidentally killed by Max. Since Cameron's death, Carmella had been spiralling out of control, eventually being caught by her Mother Superior drinking, flirting and (shock-horror!) dancing at a local club, with her nun's habit disrespectfully discarded.

Although not completely condemning of Carmella's behaviour (which I liked seeing), it was a strange reaction indeed for the Mother Superior to send Carmella away from the help she not only needed, but was begging for. But hey -- it's a plot development and it means Carmella has now moved in with her 'close friend' Ned, to sleep on the couch (apparently). Although, if it was me, I'd be offering my room to the nun and sleeping on the couch myself.

Combine the timing of this revelation with Izzy Hoyland's departure from the show earlier this week, and you have two excellently-coordinated reasons to change the opening title sequence at last. They need to remove Natalie Bassingthwaite (Izzy) and add Natalie Blair (Carmella, sans nun outfit).

They might take a week to get around to it (they did with the removal of Connor, after all), but keep an eye out and see if I'm not right.

(Hint: I will be.)

And while we're on the topic, I hope Izzy returns with a kid Karl Kennedy lookalike in a few years!

CONNOR UPDATE:

It's been a while since I gave a Connor Update, so even though there haven't been very many references to Connor, I'd better cover off on them now so I don't forget them.

Total number of 'Connor' references since my last 'Connor Update': Three. Toadie demanded that Robert (in prison) reveal what he knew about Connor's whereabouts (to which Robert just smiles evilly -- Toadie then disregarded his reaction as a lame attempt to upset him when in fact Robert 'clearly' had no idea ... but are we meant to believe that?); Ned chastised Toadie for treating him the way he was (by saying he's not Stu, he's not Connor and he's not "the other one ... you know, the Star Wars freak" [which means Lance]); and then Carmella mentioned Connor when revealing the above secret to her Mother Superior in -- of all places -- the Scarlet Bar.

Neither of the last two were references to Connor's current whereabouts, and even the first one didn't give any answers or provide any further clues. I expect we're not going to hear any more clues about his whereabouts until the producers of the show know whether or not actor Patrick Harvey intends to return to the show. If he does, they'll have to provide us with some kind of realistic backstory on why he'd disappear without contacting anyone, why Robert drove his ute out of the street, why he let his mortgage repayments dry up, and many more unrealistic loose ends. It's more likely his remains will be located somewhere, although personally I hope he returns in good health because I really like the character and actor. (If you can't tell by these 'Connor Updates'!)

Hehe ... very good. I considered making a similar joke about that ad when I was writing the post, but in the end I thought I was saying too much and being too confusing as it was.

I'm very glad you could be there to do the honours, though, LFG! :)
