Getting Lost in Lost?

For all matters relating to that phenomenal TV juggernaut that is Lost, please feel free to leave any and all questions here as a comment, and I will deal with them directly.

State which season / episode / event you're up to, and I'll refrain from spoiling anything for you.

Be warned that others may not be so kind, however. You'd be wise not to read other people's questions (and my answers to them), unless you're up-to-date with the episode that most recently aired on Australian TV.

hey i think we've watched them all, up to date now. clokes said something about the next ones being available for download from somewhere... but the last ep we saw just recently was er... finished with jack with beard and plaster on brow, in hospital, losing it, had been about to jump, saved women in car crash. then a certain k comes to meet him at his request.

sorry for codey codey but trying to be obscure for people who might not be up to this part.

is this where you're up to????

we've moved onto love my way now. after 6 eps i can say I LOVE IT IT'S THE BEST I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS BEFORE YOU MUST SEE IT. wifey would like it too, i think. it's got something for both sides of the gender divide...

happy weekend to you.

Ah, yes. You're up to the end of season three -- Channel Seven has already screened the first four episodes of season four, so don't pay attention to the TV ads because it'll spoil stuff for you.

** DON'T READ ON IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN UP TO THE SEASON THREE FINALE **

Did you love the flash-forward twist? I think it's great, and it makes for heaps more questions for the final three seasons (they've announced that there will be six in total, because they'd written it as a six-season story that slowly and tantalisingly unravels to resolve satisfactorily and intentionally across that many episodes).

I think it's fantastic. And apparently the 'future story' doesn't end there. They've promised us that the on-island story will continue to play out, and so will the flash-forward story. How frickin' brilliant, huh?!

And what about Charlie! Talk about weird ... do you remember that all along Charlie's been saying he can't swim, and always had issues running into the water to rescue Claire or whatever? Well suddenly he had this intent and purpose about swimming down to the Looking Glass station -- without making any mention of having no swimming ability or even being nervous about it. So was that a case of the writers forgetting this element of Charlie's characterisation? Or do you think he was simply too determined to fulfill his destiny (and he only had to 'sink', rather than actually 'swim') that he bravely pushed his swimming inabilities out of his mind?

Well, let me give you a hint that you probably missed (but the writers have included it in the official extra material you can find about the show online -- although I wouldn't advise you to look for it while you're still four episodes behind).

In Charlie's flashback to when he was learning to swim in the public pool with his Dad, he appears not to be gutsy enough to jump in ... but then, just as he changes his mind and about to do so, a voice can be heard calling out in the background: "Come on, let's go! Desmond!" Coincidence? Or was Desmond somehow in Charlie's past (or WILL he be; maybe we're just yet to see it happen) and did his presence somehow change Charlie's past so that he could learn to swim and fulfill his destiny to warn the survivors that the boat was not Penny's?

So many questions! This show is so clever and is definitely NOT just being made up as they go along. I love that it's all pre-planned and plotted out to make sense in the end. If you don't know that to be the case, please rest assured that it is.

I notice you didn't really ask any questions, though -- you only told me what episode you're up to. Was there anything specific you wanted clarified or to otherwise discuss?

I'm here for you, baby!

i didn't ask questions because i wasn't sure where you were up to and also didn't want to say too much in front of other readers?

but it's ok i guess to go ahead.

yep, we loved the flash forward, and that moment of realising it was like a kind of "oh my gosh what is going on, that's amazing" thing.

i am dying to know why kate is so angry with jack, who is the "he" she referred to as waiting for her. but don't tell me those things if you know.

the whole penny thing is really weird. the whole isaac thing, and ben being so so weird. hmmm maybe i don't have any questions right now.

actually i do. remember the girl that parachuted in, from penny's boat (apparently) she said that there had been no survivors on that flight, i didn't understand that, what was she talking about have you worked it out thanks bye

Some of the things you've mentioned (such as Isaac) are simply part of the mythos of the show. But other things you've mentioned have a very definitive answer (the answers to your questions about Kate have been revealed in the most recent episode to air on Australian TV, I'm delighted to report -- so you're only a handful of episodes away from finding that out, whenever you can get your hands on a copy of season 4 episodes). And no, I won't spoil anything for you that you haven't specifically asked me about.

The parachutist you're referring to (Naomi) said there were no survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 and sparked controversy in the States that this was 'definitive proof' that the show was set in hell (or purgatory), and that all the characters were actually dead.

This has been flat-out denied as false by the shows creators and writers, and you will see in the first episode of season 4 what Naomi was talking about. Basically (and I'm not spoiling anything by saying this, because it's what the writers intended for the audience to take away from Naomi's comment -- as evidenced on the Yahoo7 website that provides 'clues' and stuff immediately after each episode has aired) the rest of the world believes that Oceanic Flight 815 crashed and that everyone died.

Just WHY they think that is something you'll discover in time (you won't hear it from me), but the point is that no one is looking for them.

This will add a certain element of intrigue for you as you continue to watch.

Glad I could help.

hmmm thanks bevis. now i am really wondering about the penny/boat/naomi thing. and why naomi would say (did she say or was it implied because she had the photo or paper or whatever it was) she was from penny's rescue boat.

also about the charlie and swimming when he was little, i didn't hear the "come on desmond" thing, but that's interesting. it has been interesting in the flash backs to see how the characters' lives cross each other, sometimes quite closely. and for john's father to be the same con dude who caused sawyer's family to destruct.

maybe it's a social experiment which somehow brought everyone together - who had up until the crash been merely passing each other by. like a sliding doors type thing?

i had a thought that maybe what we've been thinking are flash backs to now, might actually be forward flashes. but then i can't remember the flash backs clearly enough to think it through properly.

so i will go and clean the house now.

Naomi stated outright that she'd been employed by Penny to find Desmond, so that's an established fact/claim on her behalf.

And no, the flashbacks are definitely set in the characters' lives before they came to the island ... with the final episode of season 3 being the first flashforward.

First of more to come?? You'll have to wait and see! ...

Nobody can really know what's going on because the writers and producers keep introducing new wrinkles and plot complications while avoiding resolving any of the previously-introduced ones. So it's become a long string of unresolved plot developments, one after the other. It's maddening, to tell you the truth. If only they'd explain SOMETHING before trotting out yet another new, bizarre twist.

Wha? ...

What show are you watching? You're not talking about Lost, that's for sure.

The writers introduce new elements to tales and characters we already know, but they're categorically NOT making it up as they go along.

Perhaps you'd benefit from reading up on the unbelievably intricate website www.lostpedia.com, if you're struggling to make sense of the stuff that's happening in the show. It all fits together rather nicely, actually.

But don't check out that site if you're not up-to-date on Lost! Otherwise it'll spoil some big stuff for you.

I hope that helps you enjoy the show a little more. It's definitely worth your time and commitment.
